Evolution of American Journalism

Journalism is the collection and editing of news for presentation through the media. What are your thoughts about early American journalism? My thoughts towards early American journalism are responsive. With the earliest American journalism, it was often disgustingly opinionated, yet censored; the complete opposite of what Journalism can be and what it is today. Back then, when the first newspaper was printed it was ended in arrest. When I thought about that and over the years to the present, I thought that the American Journalism today the profession seems to have become corrupt or debase (well something along that terms of words) itself.
And now that I have thought about it long and hard, if freedom of the press were not guaranteed, the American public would be deprived of two Constitutional rights: Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Being Informed.  Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the Press are rights of citizens in America that they can have and should be able to use. The American press would be under pressure from the government to only report what the government felt was appropriate for the public to hear. If that what was happening today, this world would be in a lot more trouble than it is now.
Throughout my journey in my journalism course I would like to learn more of the term of journalism, the rights of what was back in the olden days of newspaper and now on what's on the air now to the best of my abilities.
