The Art and their Artists

What is Art? This question often pops up every now and then, and has an infinite amount of answers. There are many disputes that art can’t be defined. We could go about this in more than a few ways. Art is often considered the progression of intentionally arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses and/or emotions of human beings. It incorporates a diverse range of human foundation, creation and ways of expression, which consist of music, literature, film, and a lot more different ways. The meaning of art is explored in different ways; one is philosophy that can also be known as aesthetics. At least, that’s what Wikipedia claims.
Art is generally understood as any activity done by people with a communicative or emotional purpose—something that expresses an idea, a deep emotion or, more generally, a world view. It is a component of culture, reflecting economic and social substrates in its design all throughout history. It transmits ideas and values inherent in every culture across space and time. Its role changes through time, acquiring more of an aesthetic component here and a socio-educational function there.
Everything that’s been said has elements of truth but also opinion. According to Wikipedia, “Art historians and philosophers of art have long had classification disputes about art regarding whether a particular cultural form or piece of work should be classified as art.”
The definition of art is still open, still idiosyncratic, and still questionable. There is no agreement among historians and artists (and there may never be), which is why we’re left with so many definitions of art. The concept itself has altered and transformed many time over the centuries.
The very notion of art continues today to stir disagreement among the art lovers and artists alike, with being so open to multiple interpretations in different views. It can be taken simply as any other human activity, or with any set of rules would be needed to develop an activity so complex. This concept is beyond what is normally understood as the “arts”. The word has many other colloquial uses as well.

Is most Modern Art not really Art?
While the definition of art has changed so many times over the years, the field of art history has developed to allow us to classify changes over time and to better understand how art shapes the surrounding world that environs us and is shaped by the creative whims and urges of artists.
Over the Internet, I did an anonymous (some users did have an account and had their usernames on the comment) debate online on a site called www.debate.org and when I had spent about two week monitoring it. I have equated the votes and 39% say yes while 61% say no.
One comment assumed, “Modern Art is Effortless to Create. I don't see how modern art is art at all. Throw some lines, some color together, and hooray, you've got yourself a modern art masterpiece. Now you sell it for a couple of hundred thousand dollars. Sure, modern art is art. It just isn't real art. It's the art for people who does whatever other people does, likes whatever other people likes, and doesn't have a taste in art at all. Modern art is bad art. It's a shame what the once-beautiful world of art has turned into nowadays.”
Another had a similar opinion, “It is not Art is a medium through which an artist can express an idea, either his or her own or a greater idea. Specifically looking at abstract art (assuming that is what is meant specifically when criticizing modern art); the work is too far removed to properly express the artist's intentions. Another aspect, which although is less significant is a symptom of the problem, is human intention. To my knowledge, no formal studies have been conducted but I would be interested in seeing the results of studies in which, for example, kindergarten paintings are compared to those of Jackson Pollock, an influential American painter and a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement. The subjects, who are ideally not supposed to have a great background on the artist, are to then identify to the best of their abilities the one that was done by the latter.”
But some did disagree. They say things like “Modern art is still art because it is simply organization of the arts” Or “Art can be anything from a painting to a crumpled piece of paper as long as it represents something.”
Someone had answered my question in a very thoughtful way, “Let's assume "modern art" refers to the evolution of abstract work from the 1860's to around the 1970's. With that is mind, there is no doubt modern art is considered "real" art. The problem is people define "art" by what they understand and what they find aesthetically appealing. This shouldn't be the case. If modern art isn't a form of art, great works by Picasso, Dali, and Van Gogh wouldn't be considered art. Even far extreme abstract painters like Jackson Pollock should be given recognition to their work. The result of the painting is just as important as the process. Whether a person likes realism or abstract art is irrelevant. Art should be unique, and as a result it will appeal to certain people. To say one piece or one artist defines all of modern art is fallacious.”
Art is ever changing in the future we will look back on the art of 2000 or even  and think "that is true art, all the so called art we have now is garbage". Every generation looks down upon the world in a different way, whether it is art, music, or society itself. Art will never be the same, it is always adapting to the times.

Online Jornalism

If you are interested in online journalism, you may wish to make a website for your final project. This assignment requires the following positions:
·         Writer: This person will work with team members to write the news stories.
·         Researcher: This person will work with team members to conduct interviews and gather research.
·         Page designer: This person will work with team members to lay out the website design.
·         Web guru: This person will work with team members to oversee the implementation of the online project.
·         Photographer: This person will work with team members to capture original images for the website.
Some members of this team may choose to do more than one task. For instance, the writer may also perform the research, or the Web guru may also design the page. You will need to discuss these roles with your team members when you develop your plan. The project will take the form of one news website with links, images, stories, and other necessary elements. Your project must represent what you believe is the best example of online journalism. Keep in mind what you know about ethics, impartiality, and journalistic methods in this medium. Be prepared to create your own presentation of the news as you feel it should appear online.
Requirements:
·         One website layout with active links
·         At least two news stories
·         At least two news photographs
·         Headlines and other website elements
·         Scripts and plans for each portion of the project
·         List of sources used for research and/or interviews
·         Constructive Criticism Checklist from each member of the team,
NOTE: The images in your project must be original photographs. They may not be pictures you collected from the Internet. You and your team members will be required to gather the necessary items to complete a news website. Make sure you have access to the needed hardware and software.
Time Saving Strategies:
·         Storyboard your website ahead of time
·         Get extra images when you take pictures.

·         Use your extra photographs to give yourself more options when laying out your website.

Note: All info here is from the Journalism Course on Florida Virtual School.

Project Proposal

I’m doing this project alone as I am pressed for time. Since I’m interested in online journalism, I want to make a website. On how I plan to complete this project is by completing a little of it every day. I’m going to use my computer for this project, and reliable news sources like CNN, MNSBC, and USATODAY. Also with the News Station near where I live. I want to address current events that go on around us that are important to everyone. Like the Travon Martin case but something more recent and some neighborhood events (like Religion Belief) I don’t have any questions to ask but I am enthusiastic about this project! I just knew it’s going to be fun!

Reporter's Notebook

Before I took Journalism
Taking this journalism course has changed my perception of journalism in many ways. Before I took this course, I did not believe that there were so many different kinds of journalists.  I had barely any idea of what a journalist was or that there were different types of journalist under different classifications.  I’d never classed anything having to do with the radio as journalism before this course. The purpose of journalism hasn't changed in my mind one bit: getting information across to people. I had no idea about journalistic ethics before I started doing this journalism class. In fact, I didn't have much interest in journalism until I started this class. I knew opinion was not allowed and very unprofessional in anything you write as a journalist, unless it’s an editorial. Before this course, I never thought of doing journalism as a career, and even after taking the course, I’m still not leaning towards pursuing it but the thought of doing a career in journalism would be a fun experience to have.

After I took Journalism
My definition of a journalist has changed after my experiences in this class. Now I see that journalists are people that cause news to be heard, spread, and inform the people on things relevant and important in different ways. For instance, now I know much more about journalistic ethics and I believe journalist now are people who write for newspapers or magazines or prepares news to be broadcast on radio or television. It’s different than what I knew before I took this class because now I know much more about journalist on how they should stay impartial and honest with the public. I knew most of the ethics before I started the course; it’s pretty much common sense. I learned about editorials being opinion writing. The future holds journalism in almost a permanent place in the world, because the people need to know things and know what is going on about and around them, so I do not think it will ever die. Freedom of speech isn't going away and neither is peoples want for news.

Getting an Education

To start off my career path on photojournalism, I will either attend Academy of Art University that is in San Francisco, CA or Ringling Collage of Art and Design that is in Sarasota, FL (for their photography programs) or Princeton (for their writing & journalism programs) just in case I need to write the story to the photos I take. My first milestone will be to successfully sell my photos for stories in the

  • How do I get there from here?
    • Right now I want to keep up my grades and maintain my GPA to at least a 4.0 or higher. So, I hope I’m able to get into one of the collages I want to get into.
  • What education do I need to reach this milestone?
    • I would need to get a Bachelor’s Degree in Photography as well as in Writing/Journalism.
  • What education do I need to succeed in this career?
    • I need to get my Master’s Degree in Photography and Writing/Journalism but to get my Bachelor is the first step to take.
  • What steps can I take now to begin preparing my future?
    • I need to keep my milestone in mind and continue to get good grades until I am out of high school and onto collage. All while maintaining my GPA on 4.0 or over.
  • How long might this take me?
    • I know where I am now; it’s going to take a few years to get to where I want to be. But before I could get anywhere I am going to need some internship experience for well… experience.
Looking at my life plan, I feel my goals are very reasonable. Far to reach for but reasonable.  I can definitely get into a good college and study the different types of photography, and I believe I can successfully get a job with selling my photos in due time, it won’t be smoothing sailing at all. Having a career plan written out is a good idea for me, I like knowing exactly what my goal is and knowing how I can reach it. People with career plans like to know that they have control over their future and can decide on what happens next in their milestone.

Your Interest Inventory

  • Where is the job located?
    • Photojournalism
    • The majority of photojournalists are freelancers and but there are attempt to sell to media outlets, such as magazines and newspapers. Though there are some national publications occasionally hire staff photographers to work as photojournalists.
  • About how much money can a person in that position expect to make?
    • $20,000 to $55,000 a year depending on who they sell their photos for and/or who they work for. A few of them make more, but that is rare.
  • What skills are required?
    • You need a keen eye, a way with words, and a knack for putting the two together when writing your article.
    • You must have a steady hand, when holding a camera.
    • You need to have experience with both taking photos and writing the story with information out on what your photo shows.
  • What level of education is required?
    • A formal education is not always necessary in order to pursue a photojournalism career. But you will need to earn Bachelor degrees in photography or journalism or both that should.
  • What kind of experience is expected?
    • You need to have experience at least in taking photos and writing stories other than that you really don’t need it.

Reporter's Notebook

I really don’t have a journalist that I admire but I have one who interests me and Liz Nagy is the one. Liz started out as a journalist in Charleston, Illinois as an anchor the weekend morning newscast. When she was done with that part of her life, she transferred to WEAR, the ABC affiliate in Pensacola, FL for a news anchor job. Though when Liz came to Miami, FL where she took part in several morning anchor positions in Channel 7 news that lasted for a few years and is there now.

With her level of experience has a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Communications from Elon University which makes her perfect for the career she has right now.

  • How does this current job differ from the journalist’s previous news positions?
    • The only real difference is that now she mostly takes part as a reporter
  • How is this current job similar to the journalist’s previous new positions?
    • Her career now is similar to before because she still does take part in being an anchor. Her past position mainly takes place as anchors and reporters and she does the same nowadays.
  • Is this journalist at the top of his or her career, in your opinion? Explain your answer.
    • She is not at the top of her career, I think that she use to but soon enough she went downhill and well she was arrested for some things and well that’s that.
  • What duties must someone in this person’s position perform?
    • When she writes, she keeps all opinion out of the story and is fair to everyone involved.

The Final Draft

Reading Maximum Ride, School’s Out Forever by James Patterson

When you are reading James Patterson’s easy-to-read, fast-paced Maximum Ride series, it’s a great way to past the time. He keeps the chapters short, and you find yourself turning the pages at a fast rate, keeping in line with the novel’s pace. Since I’ve just come off a streak of reading nonfiction books about genetic engineering, Patterson’s page turner was a relief. Max, Fang, Iggy, Gasman, Nudge, and Angel are back for a second round of action (after their first adventure in Maximum Ride, The Angel Experiment), running from Erasers (half-wolf, half-human experiments like The Flock but with wolves), outsmarting the Whitecoats (evil scientist bent on destroying the world and The Flock themselves.) The six genetically engineered bird kids and their talking dog, Total, they picked up where the last round left off. They have information that might lead them to their parents. Max’s Voice is driving her crazy. And, they’re going to school (the real kind).
Ari, is a 7-year-old Eraser, but is the size of a full grown human, and Jeb's only son. He had wings retrofitted on by the whitecoats in, School’s Out Forever. In The Angel Experiment, while fighting in the New York sewers, Max accidentally snaps Ari's neck and he supposedly died. However, at the School they fused the bones in his neck and brought him back to life, much to the dismay of the Flock. Ari, the genetically engineered Eraser (half-wolf, half-human), finally shows his human side.
This was the one thing the first book, The Angel Experiment, was lacking. We see that he is not just a monster, but he has retained his human feelings after all of his alterations. On the other hand, we are also should remember that Ari is a 7-year-old boy beneath that grown exterior.
One of the main events is when Fang is critically injured on the way to DC by a flying Eraser attack. They have no choice but to go to the hospital where their secret is discovered. The Flock is questioned by the FBI, and in return for Fang's treatment, Max reluctantly agrees for the Flock to stay with Anne Walker, an agent, until Fang recovers.
I conducted two interviews of a woman named Brinda Laya, who owns a bookstore in my neighborhood and Cody, a childhood friend of mine.
When I asked them of what they thoughts of Anne personally, they were quite similar. Cody deadpanned, “I just don’t like her. When she revealed that was Jeb’s boss, I started to hate her and still do hate her though, I do wonder what is going to happen to her later in the series.” Brinda shook her head, simple saying, “I don’t like Anne, that’s it. I won’t say anything else, I just don’t like her and that’s that.”
I wondered, when I read the book personally, why did Ari want to ‘take’ Max away so badly? Cody suggested, “I think it’s an obsession that Ari has with Max as she is his sister and wants to the only one to be with her.” Though Brinda says differently, “Ari wants Max to be his friend; he loves her a lot and wants to be alone with her for his whole life after all he is only 7 years old.
Most of the story was told through the eyes of Max. She becomes jealous of the FBI agent who takes them in and plays the mother role to the kids for a while. She becomes jealous, or at least mad, at the girl who kisses Fang at school.
Brinda declared, “I give the book 5 stars for the second sequel of Maximum Ride. I feel so excited when running in the same ride as Max and the Flocks. James Patterson is indeed an amazing writer. His stories made me not only flutter with excitement but also not predict what will happen next. Perhaps, this is one of the factors that make Maximum Ride become a bestselling book.”
Cody had a similar opinion on the story, “I read the book "School's out-Forever" by James Patterson and liked all of it just not one part. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of James Patterson's work, or someone that enjoys reading books that are action-packed.
When interview both people, I asked them what their favorite character was. Brinda had said it was Max. “She seems like a great leader and a great role model. In the books they always say how Max was determined and she will win this fight. That shows that she doesn't give up and I like that about her. It also says how everyone looks up to her and the rest of the flock respect her and listen to her.”
Cody took a while to think about this, he stated that he didn’t have a favorite character but did have a least favored character, the youngest of The Flock, Angel. He explained, “She's just a 6 year old and she thinks she can lead the flock. When she doesn't get what she wants she tries to control they’re mind and change what their thinking. Sometimes it comes in handy when they're in trouble. But other times she doesn't use it for a good cause. She also tries to take over Max's spot as leader.
Continuing on, during the book series there was a substitute Max that replaced the real Max at one part book. OK the diabolical scale of 1 to 10, what do you rate of the fact that Max had been replaced by a substitute Max?
Both interviewees agreed with each other on this topic. Brinda rated higher with a 9 and was convinced when Substitute Max was the real Max for some time before she learned when that it was not the real Max but the fake one while the real Max was captured by Jeb and The School. Cody rated a 7, “I really can’t tell the difference between both Max’s but only that their personalities are very different.”
When they were both finished with reading the book, I questioned what their contemplations were of Jeb and The School. Both had a similar outlook with saying they didn’t like both Jeb and The School in the end.
“I really don’t know what to think of Jeb, I used to think that he was a cool person who took in the Flock but at the same time not a good parent when he left Ari behind. Now The School, I think it’s a sick place when they performed (they still are) all the experiments with all the children and the clones and all that.” Brinda stated with an objectionable look on her face. Yet, Cody’s replay was short and simple, “I really can’t say anything on it but I do hate them both.”
Both interviews went very well, Brinda and Cody were very happy to give their opinions. With managed to get two points of views of the book from a male and a female and a general outlook from each person was a good idea. But Brinda seemed to have a better outlook on the story then Cody as he just skimmed through some parts of the book then actually read it when he confessed at the end of the interview.
When reading School’s Out Forever, Patterson focuses on character development throughout most of the book. The major storyline left off in the same place that it began. It’s hard not to like the action. Not to like the easy-flowing style.

Reflective:
Working with Caridad was great, even though I found a lot of mistakes with my essay he pointed them out and I was able to make a way better essay then the first one. I found where my weak points stood in my writing as well as the errors that I needed to correct. Additionally, reading Caridad’s news story was remarkable because he is a wonderful writer; his news story pertaining to Depression is absorbing and captivating.  All in all, I have gained much knowledge about Caridad’s news story, while completing this assignment; I attained several writing skills and am able to better understand where my weakness is so that I can work on them.
